A serious fire broke out on Thursday afternoon at a homeless shelter located on Reichensteiner Weg in the Lichterfelde district of southwest Berlin, resulting in significant damage and leaving part of the facility uninhabitable. Emergency services responded promptly after residents in the vicinity reported the incident around 3:30 p.m.
According to information provided by the fire department, the blaze is believed to have started on the second floor of the multi-storey building. The fire rapidly spread upwards, eventually reaching the attic and causing extensive structural damage. More than one hundred firefighters were deployed to battle the flames and contain the situation.
During the evacuation process, many of the 27 residents inside the shelter managed to exit the building independently before emergency personnel arrived. Firefighters assisted in the rescue of seven individuals who were still inside, including two residents who were unable to move due to medical conditions. All rescued individuals received immediate attention from emergency medical teams on site.
A total of 15 people suffered from smoke inhalation, with six requiring transportation to nearby hospitals for further treatment. The rest of the affected individuals were treated at the scene and monitored for any signs of complications related to the fire or smoke exposure. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported as a result of the incident.
Following the successful containment and extinguishing of the flames, authorities conducted a thorough assessment of the building's structural integrity. They determined that, while some sections of the facility remained habitable, other areas had sustained such severe damage that they could no longer safely accommodate residents. Those displaced by the fire were provided with temporary alternative accommodation, coordinated by local social services in cooperation with emergency management teams.
Fire department officials are currently investigating the cause of the fire, though no official statement has yet been made regarding the origin or potential contributing factors. The incident highlights ongoing challenges faced by vulnerable populations in Berlin, especially regarding the safety and resilience of social housing infrastructure.
Local authorities have pledged to support affected residents and ensure the continuation of essential services while repairs are undertaken. Efforts are also underway to review safety protocols and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The fire at the Lichterfelde homeless shelter serves as a reminder of the importance of robust safety measures and adequate emergency response systems in facilities serving at-risk communities. Further updates are expected as the investigation proceeds and recovery efforts continue.
