Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate - The Mainz Diocese has agreed to compensate an adult male abuse survivor with a significant sum of EUR340,000. This decision comes as financial redress for the extensive abuse he endured as a child at the hands of a Catholic priest. The settlement was reached in a court case at the Mainz District Court, as initially reported by the 'Allgemeine Zeitung.'
The abuse reportedly began when the victim was just 11 years old, continuing for several years from 1986 to 1991. This case highlights the ongoing issue of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church, a subject that has been under scrutiny for many years. In 2020, protests were held at the spring assembly of the German Bishops' Conference, emphasizing the need for accountability and reform in the Church.
Initially, the Mainz Diocese awarded the plaintiff EUR50,000 as part of the legal proceedings. Following a review, the 'Independent Commission for Recognition Services' (UKA) subsequently approved an additional EUR190,000 for the victim. The UKA is responsible for determining compensation amounts for abuse survivors within the Catholic Church.
As part of the settlement agreement, the victim will receive an additional EUR100,000 to cover pain and suffering, as well as anticipated loss of earnings, bringing the total amount to EUR340,000. This sum is among the highest ever awarded by a diocese in Germany for such cases.
Stephanie Rieth, the representative of the General Vicar at the Mainz Diocese, expressed gratitude that the case was resolved through a court settlement. She acknowledged the complexity of handling the pain and suffering experienced by the victim and apologized on behalf of the diocese for any shortcomings in addressing his concerns throughout the process.
Initially, the diocese attempted to dismiss the case citing statutes of limitations; however, the Mainz District Court rejected this argument, emphasizing the profound trauma experienced by the victim.
