Mainz 05 Appoints Urs Fischer as Head Coach to Steer Club Away from Relegation

Sun 7th Dec, 2025

FSV Mainz 05 has announced the appointment of Urs Fischer as its new head coach, entrusting the experienced Swiss manager with the task of guiding the team out of a precarious position at the bottom of the Bundesliga table. Fischer, who signed a contract running until 2028, steps in following the departure of Bo Henriksen and interim stewardship by Benjamin Hoffmann.

Fischer brings a wealth of experience to Mainz, having previously managed Bundesliga rivals 1. FC Union Berlin until late 2023. During his tenure, he was instrumental in developing Union Berlin, guiding the club through a historic period that included promotion to the Bundesliga and subsequent qualifications for European competitions, including a remarkable entry into the Champions League in 2023. His managerial career also includes successful spells with Swiss clubs FC Zürich and FC Basel.

The managerial change comes as Mainz seeks to reverse its fortunes after a challenging start to the Bundesliga season. Under Henriksen, the team managed only one victory in the first twelve league fixtures, leaving them rooted at the foot of the table. Despite Henriksen's previous success in securing Bundesliga survival and orchestrating a surprise European campaign, the current season's form necessitated a change in leadership.

Benjamin Hoffmann, previously responsible for Mainz's U23 side, temporarily took charge of the first team, overseeing a narrow 1-0 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Club officials had confirmed prior to the match that Hoffmann's involvement was always intended as a short-term solution, pending the appointment of a permanent head coach.

Fischer faces an immediate and demanding schedule in his new role. His debut as Mainz head coach will come in a UEFA Conference League fixture against Polish side Lech Poznan. Just days later, the team is set to face a formidable challenge away to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, further underlining the urgency of the task at hand.

Mainz 05's sporting director emphasized Fischer's credentials, citing his proven ability to organize and develop teams at various professional levels. The club is hopeful that Fischer's composed approach and tactical acumen will instill renewed discipline and cohesion within the squad, key factors that contributed to his previous successes.

Fischer is expected to begin preparations for the upcoming European tie immediately, with a clear overarching priority: securing Bundesliga safety and extending the club's 17-year presence in Germany's top flight. The management and supporters alike will be looking to Fischer to galvanize the squad and engineer a turnaround in results as the season progresses.

With the appointment of Urs Fischer, Mainz 05 signals its intent to remain competitive in the Bundesliga and build towards long-term stability and growth. The coming weeks will be critical as Fischer implements his strategies and works to lift the team out of the relegation zone.
