Recovery Operation for Luxury Yacht 'Bayesian' Concludes

Sun 22nd Jun, 2025

The wreckage of the luxury yacht 'Bayesian,' previously considered 'unsinkable,' has been successfully raised from the depths off the coast of Sicily. This operation comes nearly ten months after the vessel tragically capsized during a storm, resulting in the loss of seven lives, including that of its owner, British software billionaire Mike Lynch, and his 18-year-old daughter.

Specialized cranes were employed to hoist the 56-meter yacht from approximately 50 meters underwater, providing a unique sight for beachgoers near Palermo. The vessel has now reached the port of Termini Imerese, where authorities will continue their investigations and assessments.

According to a British investigation report, the 'Bayesian' was inadequately equipped to handle extreme weather conditions, including wind speeds reaching up to 130 kilometers per hour. The Italian Coast Guard led the complex salvage operation, which faced numerous delays and challenges, including a tragic incident in early May when a Dutch diver lost his life during the underwater preparations.

Upon its retrieval, the wreck was inspected and found to be in a relatively intact condition, though some structural damage was evident, particularly in the superstructure. The yacht's 72-meter mast, which had been severed and remained on the seabed, is also slated for recovery in the coming days.

The area surrounding the wreck is currently under surveillance to monitor potential environmental hazards, including any fuel that may still be trapped within the yacht's hull.

Investigators are focused on determining the circumstances that led to the vessel's sinking. One theory suggests that a hatch may have been left open, allowing water to flood the ship; however, initial assessments of the wreck indicate that this hatch was, in fact, closed at the time of the incident. The primary goal now is to gather evidence, document any construction flaws, and ascertain the precise cause of the maritime disaster.

Currently, inquiries are directed at the New Zealand captain and two crew members for potential negligence. Allegations claim they disregarded storm warnings and prioritized their own safety over that of the passengers.
