Ten Years After the OECD's Warning: Bias Against Boys in Schools Still Ignored

A recent study has unveiled that a single administration of LSD may provide significant relief from anxiety symptoms for an extended period, lasting up to three months. The findings, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), highlight the potential of this psychedelic compound as a viable treatment option for individuals suffering from anxiety disorders.
Conducted with nearly 200 participants diagnosed with moderate to severe anxiety, the research assessed various dosages of LSD. Results indicated that those who received the higher doses experienced a notable decrease in anxiety scores at the four-week mark compared to individuals who received lower doses or a placebo. Remarkably, by the twelve-week follow-up, approximately 65% of participants who had taken the most effective dose (100 milligrams) continued to report improvements, with nearly half of them meeting the criteria for remission.
Lead researcher Dr. Maurizio Fava, affiliated with Mass General Brigham Hospital in Boston, expressed optimism about the findings, noting the significant long-lasting effects observed. However, he cautioned that some patients might require additional treatments, though the specific frequency of such retreats remains undetermined.
Unlike many previous studies on psychedelics that involved extensive psychotherapy, this trial focused solely on the effects of LSD in a controlled environment, allowing researchers to better isolate the drug's impact. However, the study faced some challenges, including participants' ability to determine whether they had ingested LSD or a placebo, which may have influenced the objectivity of the results. Additionally, a number of participants withdrew from the study prematurely, leading to a reduced final data set.
Reported side effects included hallucinations, nausea, and headaches, which are common when using psychedelic substances. In light of these findings, MindMed, the company overseeing the research, is planning to conduct two larger, late-stage trials to monitor patients over a more extended period. Should the results remain favorable, the company aims to seek approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Dr. Fava emphasized that while LSD has been acknowledged for its potential, MindMed is pioneering its evaluation as a therapeutic agent. The growing interest in psychedelics is reflected in ongoing research exploring their applications in treating various mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. In recent years, the FDA has recognized multiple psychedelic compounds, including psilocybin, MDMA, and now LSD, by granting them 'breakthrough therapy' status.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), generalized anxiety disorder affects nearly 3% of the adult population in the United States. Traditional treatment options currently include psychotherapy, antidepressants, and anti-anxiety medications, underscoring the need for innovative approaches to address this widespread condition.
