Lauterbach Optimistic About Future of Hospital Reform

Mon 7th Apr, 2025

The German Federal Minister of Health, Karl Lauterbach, has expressed confidence in the ongoing reform of the hospital system, asserting that it will remain intact and not be diluted. Lauterbach's commitment to this initiative follows the Federal Council's approval of his proposed changes last November, which came after negotiations with state representatives. The approval was crucial, as a failure to reach an agreement could have led to the involvement of a mediation committee, effectively jeopardizing the legislation's future, especially given the current political climate following the collapse of the coalition government.

During an interview with a national radio station, Lauterbach reiterated his belief in the necessity for hospitals to specialize and move away from the current payment system based on case flat rates. He emphasized his expectation that the reform will continue into the new legislative period, buoyed by what he described as fair negotiations with the opposition parties.

As discussions continue among the leaders of the major political parties, including the Union and the SPD, they are working to finalize the coalition agreement by midweek. Important issues such as finances, labor, and migration are reportedly nearing resolution, although there is skepticism about whether all proposed initiatives will be included in the final agreement. Reports indicate that the SPD has introduced a savings plan with a potential reduction of expenditures in the billions.

Amidst these negotiations, the focus remains on prioritizing key projects and ensuring that the reform of the healthcare system remains a central theme, as Lauterbach remains steadfast in his vision for a more specialized and efficient hospital network in Germany.
