Weak Demand for Labor in Germany Reaches Lowest Level Since March 2021

Thu 27th Feb, 2025

The demand for labor in Germany has hit a low not seen since March 2021, according to the latest report from the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit). The agency's job index fell to 103 points in February, a decrease of two points compared to the previous month. This drop marks the continuation of a downward trend in labor demand.

Across various sectors, companies are reporting a notable decline in the number of job vacancies compared to the same month last year, with some industries experiencing double-digit percentage reductions. The most significant decreases have been noted in qualified business services, the hospitality sector, and financial services, including banks and insurance. Additionally, sectors such as information and communication technology and manufacturing have also seen substantial drops in labor demand.

In absolute terms, the largest reductions were recorded in business services and the manufacturing sector. As the economic landscape continues to shift, the employment agency is set to release updated labor market data for February, following January's report, which indicated that the number of unemployed individuals was just shy of three million.

Economists predict a slight increase in unemployment for February, estimating an addition of 15,000 jobless individuals when seasonally adjusted figures are considered. The German economy has faced contraction in both 2023 and 2024, and experts anticipate minimal growth for the current year. This economic uncertainty is contributing to a decline in consumer confidence, with fears of job losses further dampening spending habits.

Moreover, a recent study suggests that by the end of 2025, an estimated 100,000 jobs in the industrial sector could be lost, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the labor market. As businesses adapt to these conditions, the demand for new employees remains muted, reflecting a cautious approach in hiring practices.
