The parliamentary elections in Kosovo have commenced, inviting around two million eligible voters to participate. Polling stations opened at 7 AM CET, with Albin Kurti's left-nationalist party, Vetevendosje (Self-Determination), positioned as the frontrunner. However, it appears unlikely that the party will secure an absolute majority exceeding 50% of the votes, which they achieved in the previous election four years ago.
The main contenders challenging Vetevendosje include the liberal Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and the centrist Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK). In accordance with the country's electoral laws, ten seats in the 120-seat parliament are reserved for the Serbian community, with an additional ten seats allocated for other minority groups.
As a potential candidate for European Union membership, Kosovo is navigating significant political dynamics. This election marks the first time since 2010 that a parliamentary assembly in Kosovo has completed its full four-year term. Historically, Kosovo was a province of Serbia until it declared independence in 2008, a move that Serbia has yet to recognize, resulting in ongoing tensions between the two nations. The Serbian government has also been accused of leveraging the Serbian population in northern Kosovo to further its political agenda.
During his tenure, Kurti has made strides in dismantling parallel structures established by Serbia in northern Kosovo, including banning the use of the Serbian dinar as legal tender and closing Serbian post offices. While these actions have garnered him support among many Kosovars, they have drawn criticism from Western allies. Furthermore, Kurti has faced allegations of falling short in fulfilling several ambitious reform pledges.
The polling stations will remain open until 7 PM, with preliminary results expected to emerge later in the evening. Voter surveys conducted after the polls close are anticipated to provide immediate insights into the electoral outcome.
