Koblenz Police Issued Warning Against Antiquities Scams

Wed 12th Mar, 2025

Koblenz - Local authorities are issuing warnings regarding dishonest practices in the antiquities market, which have been increasingly linked to fraud and theft incidents. Reports within the jurisdiction of the Koblenz police department indicate a rise in cases where antiquities are advertised through flyers distributed with daily newspapers.

Individuals interested in purchasing these items often reach out to the contact numbers listed on these flyers, arranging to meet with the sellers. During these meetings, the sellers frequently inquire about valuable jewelry that they claim to be interested in purchasing. Under the pretense of evaluating the jewelry's worth, these fraudulent buyers typically make a small down payment and then take the jewelry with them, failing to follow through with the promised full payment.

The police strongly advise against conducting such transactions in private residences. It is recommended that any transfer of valuable items, including jewelry, should only occur after an agreement has been finalized and payment has been received--ideally in the presence of witnesses. To ensure safety during these exchanges, buyers should be asked to present identification, and any agreements should be documented in writing.

Particularly vulnerable individuals, such as those living alone, are urged to seek advice from family members, friends, or law enforcement before engaging in such transactions. This advisory comes in response to an uptick in reported scams and aims to protect the community from falling victim to these deceitful schemes.

Police officials continue to stress the importance of vigilance when dealing with potential purchases of antiques and valuables, especially in light of these recent developments. Community members are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to local law enforcement.
