JetBrains, the Czech software development company, has announced a strategic pivot to concentrate on enhancing support for Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) within its existing IntelliJ platform. This decision stems from feedback received from developers who have expressed a desire for integrated KMP capabilities in both IntelliJ IDEA and Android Studio.
The demand for improved KMP tools has surged, particularly following Google's endorsement of KMP for Android applications. In light of this, JetBrains has decided to discontinue the development of a standalone KMP integrated development environment (IDE) and will instead focus on reinforcing its current platforms.
Over the next three months, JetBrains will gradually phase out KMP support on its Fleet platform. This marks a significant shift in strategy aimed at reallocating resources to enhance the KMP development experience within IntelliJ. The company assures users that the feedback gathered during this transition will be invaluable and will inform future enhancements.
JetBrains has cultivated a comprehensive ecosystem around the Kotlin programming language in recent years and views this realignment as an opportunity to further refine the developer experience. Additional details regarding new features and updates will be disclosed in forthcoming communications from the company.
