The vehicles featured in the James Bond films have always held a special significance, akin to the famous martini associated with the iconic spy. From the classic Aston Martin DB5 to various helicopters and submarines, these machines are integral to the franchise. A newly released book delves into the fascinating world of 007's vehicles, exploring their legacy and current whereabouts.
As the eagerly awaited return of James Bond remains a topic of speculation, particularly following Amazon's acquisition of the franchise, fans and media alike are curious about who will don the tuxedo next and, crucially, what vehicles will accompany him. Iconic cars such as the Aston Martin DB5, Lotus Esprit, and BMW Z3 have played pivotal roles throughout the series. The latest volume titled Spy Octane: The Vehicles of James Bond - Volume 1 chronicles the rich history of these vehicles, alongside a variety of other modes of transportation utilized in the films, including helicopters, submarines, and even the famed Moonbuggy.
Authors Matthew Field and Ajay Chowdhury investigate what happened to these vehicles after filming wrapped up. They highlight their efforts in locating several cars that were presumed lost, such as the two Toyota 2000GT convertibles created for the film You Only Live Twice (1967), along with the Aston Martin DBS Vantage and Mercury Cougar XR-7 convertibles from On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969).
Through extensive research, the authors uncovered numerous unpublished photographs and documents that enhance the narrative. They gained access to private and corporate archives worldwide, including those of Ford and Toyota, which provided a wealth of previously unseen images. Additionally, the family of Ken Wallis, the pilot and inventor behind the autogyro known as 'Little Nellie' from You Only Live Twice, shared insights from their private collection, detailing the story of the mini-helicopter used by Bond to eliminate villains.
Field and Chowdhury also explore the lifelong passion of Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, for high-end automobiles. Fleming's enthusiasm for driving is reflected in his creation of a character who shares this fervor. Spy Octane: The Vehicles of James Bond - Volume 1 offers an in-depth look behind the scenes over 400 pages, detailing the remarkable vehicles seen in the first seven Bond films, from Dr. No (1962) to Diamonds Are Forever (1971). Two additional volumes in the Spy Octane series are already in development.
