iOS 26 Introduces Enhanced AI Model Selection in Shortcuts

Fri 1st Aug, 2025

Apple is set to unveil significant advancements in its Shortcuts app with the release of iOS 26, introducing enhanced capabilities for users to interact with artificial intelligence.

One of the standout features of the updated Shortcuts app is the 'Use Model' function, which allows script developers to select the AI model they wish to utilize. Users can opt for local processing on their devices, utilize Apple's Private Cloud Compute, or leverage the capabilities of OpenAI's ChatGPT. This flexibility enables users to compare the performance of different models, thereby facilitating more informed decisions regarding AI outputs.

Apple's communications regarding iOS 26 highlight practical applications for the new AI functionalities. For instance, a student could employ the AI models to transcribe audio from a seminar and cross-reference the transcription with their own notes, ensuring accuracy and completeness. Interestingly, Apple acknowledges the strengths of ChatGPT, suggesting that users can benefit from its extensive knowledge base.

The updated Shortcuts app will also feature pre-configured shortcuts utilizing Apple Intelligence, easily accessible through the app's gallery. These shortcuts will enable users to create daily summaries, generate recipes based on available ingredients, and summarize PDF documents. Additional shortcuts will cater to image generation, visual intelligence tasks, and text manipulation. Users will be able to create lists and tables from existing content, correct or rewrite text, summarize information, or even alter the tone of the written material.

Apple plans to release iOS 26 in September, with the AI features in Shortcuts available on compatible Macs and iPads. On iPhones, the new capabilities will require at least an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, while all models in the iPhone 16 series will support the AI system, including the 16e variant.
