iOS 18.3 Enhances iPhone Calculator with Key Feature Restoration

Thu 30th Jan, 2025

Apple has made a notable update to its Calculator app with the release of iOS 18.3, reinstating a feature that many users found essential. This update comes after a significant omission when the transition from iOS 17 to iOS 18 removed the repeat calculation function, which allowed users to execute the last operation multiple times with a single tap.

Previously, users of iOS 17 could easily replicate calculations by pressing the equal sign again. For instance, entering '2 x 2' and pressing '=' would yield '4', and pressing '=' once more would multiply '4' by '2', resulting in '8'. However, following the upgrade to iOS 18, this feature was inexplicably disabled, frustrating many users who relied on it for quick computations.

Fortunately, the latest update, iOS 18.3, has restored this functionality, much to the relief of the user community. Reports indicate that this change was discovered by users themselves, as Apple did not officially announce the restoration in the update notes.

Additionally, this enhancement is not limited to the iPhone; the iPad version of the Calculator app, which also suffered from the same issue, has seen the return of the repeat calculation feature with the release of iPadOS 18.3.

However, the update does not restore all previously available functionalities. Users will notice that the swipe gesture to delete individual digits has been removed. Swiping left now only displays the calculation history, a feature that is not frequently utilized in everyday use. The rationale behind this change remains unclear, leading to speculation that both the iPhone and iPad versions underwent a review of their features during the development of iPadOS 18.

For those who wish to voice their concerns regarding missing features, Apple encourages users to provide feedback through its official product feedback portal on the Apple website. This allows users to share their thoughts and suggestions directly with the company.
