In the aftermath of a tragic incident in Mannheim, investigators are focusing their efforts on the interrogation of a 40-year-old man from Ludwigshafen, who has been arrested in connection with the case. He faces serious charges, including two counts of murder and multiple counts of attempted murder. Authorities hope to gain insight into his motives and the circumstances surrounding the incident during the upcoming questioning.
The suspect was injured following an auto attack in Mannheim's city center on Rosenmontag. Reports indicate that he attempted suicide by shooting himself in the mouth with a blank pistol during his arrest. The man is now in police custody and is anticipated to appear before a judge later today. According to reports from the German Press Agency, the vehicle involved in the incident is registered in his name.
Witnesses report that he drove at high speed for several hundred meters through a pedestrian zone, resulting in the deaths of an 83-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man. Additionally, eleven others sustained injuries, with several individuals in critical condition.
As part of the investigation, authorities conducted a thorough search of the suspect's residence in Ludwigshafen, where they recovered various items which are currently under analysis. Among the items found was a note containing sketches and cryptic writings, including calculations related to speed and stopping distances, along with references to directional turns. Investigators are now tasked with determining the relevance of these notes to the case.
In response to the incident, local emergency services have set up a support center in the pedestrian zone to assist witnesses and those affected. Isabel Gürel from the Mannheim emergency services reported that the team will be available throughout the day to offer help, particularly to employees of nearby businesses who may be struggling with the emotional aftermath of the event.
As the community begins to process the shock of this tragedy, a memorial service organized by local churches is scheduled for later this afternoon at the City Church of Concordia. The service aims to provide a space for collective mourning and reflection, with local dignitaries in attendance, including the mayor of Mannheim and prominent religious leaders.
In light of the incident, planned carnival parades in the surrounding neighborhoods have been canceled, and the carnival market near the scene of the tragedy has also been closed. The mayor has ordered flags at municipal buildings to be flown at half-mast as a gesture of mourning for the victims.
