Authorities in Lithuania have concluded that the recent arson attacks on commercial establishments in Lithuania and Poland were orchestrated by the Russian military intelligence agency. The findings stem from investigations into incidents that occurred in May 2024, which involved fires at an Ikea store in Vilnius and a shopping center in Warsaw.
The Lithuanian General Prosecutor's Office announced that two individuals, both Ukrainian nationals, were arrested in connection with these incidents. One of them, who is still a minor, has been charged with terrorism-related offenses related to the Ikea arson. Both suspects are believed to have acted under orders from Russian operatives, according to the prosecutor's office.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the suspects had agreed to set fire to shopping centers in Lithuania and Latvia for a reward of EUR10,000, which included the promise of a vehicle. One suspect remains in custody in Poland while the other was apprehended after attempting to travel to Latvia following the attacks.
Investigators described the arson as a premeditated act, carried out using incendiary devices equipped with timers, indicating a level of sophistication that suggests external coordination. One investigator noted that these actions were linked directly to Russian military and intelligence operations.
Additionally, the prosecutors indicated that there is evidence pointing to a wider network of accomplices involved in the planning and execution of these attacks. This network reportedly utilized encrypted communication channels to coordinate their efforts, further complicating the investigation.
Poland has also been on alert regarding similar incidents. In May 2024, a significant fire in Warsaw destroyed a shopping complex, displacing over 700 workers. The Polish government has consistently accused the Russian intelligence services of being behind various acts of sabotage and arson within its borders.
Following the revelations from Lithuanian investigators, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk publicly acknowledged the findings, asserting that the confirmation of Russian involvement underscores the need for vigilance as negotiations concerning a ceasefire in Ukraine progress. He highlighted that such actions are consistent with Russia's broader tactics.
As the situation evolves, both Lithuania and Poland continue to strengthen their security measures in light of these alarming developments, emphasizing their commitment to safeguarding their nations against external threats.
