Authorities in Saxony are investigating a 16-year-old German boy on suspicions of violating the War Weapons Control Act. The youth is alleged to have produced several vials of the highly toxic substance, ricin, at his parents' home in Zeithain.

On Thursday morning, investigators from the Saxony State Criminal Police Office executed a search warrant at the teenager's residence. They are working to secure all hazardous materials and other evidence related to the case. The location of the search is notably close to a daycare center and an elementary school, which have been informed of the situation, although no evacuation was deemed necessary. Authorities emphasize that there is no threat to public safety.

Ricin is a potent plant toxin derived from the seeds of the castor bean plant (Ricinus communis), commonly known as the "miracle tree." According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), ricin inhibits protein synthesis within cells, ultimately leading to cell death. While castor oil, used in various medications and cosmetic products, is extracted from the castor bean, the remaining byproducts contain the deadly toxin. The trade of ricin has been restricted since the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1997, and it is classified as a biological weapon.

As part of the ongoing investigation, experts from the RKI are on-site to assist law enforcement. Emergency services have established a decontamination area as a precaution. A specialized team from the State Criminal Police is currently assessing the laboratory setup within the house, wearing full protective gear.

Ricin poses a substantial health risk, with even small quantities capable of causing fatal outcomes. Additionally, the alkaloid aconitine, which can be extracted from the blue aconite plant, adds to the danger. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) warns that mere milligrams of pure aconitine can be lethal to adults.

As of now, no arrest warrant has been issued, and the suspect does not have a criminal history. Investigators have not yet established a clear motive or further details surrounding the case.
