Intensified Backlash Against Baerbock Over Controversial UN Position

Fri 28th Mar, 2025

The criticism directed at outgoing German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock regarding her controversial nomination for a position at the United Nations continues to escalate. Recently, it was revealed that the German government has put forth Baerbock as the country's candidate for the presidency of the UN General Assembly for the session of 2025/26. This decision has drawn ire, particularly as Helga Schmid, a seasoned diplomat, was initially slated for the role.

Internal communications from UN staff, which have been obtained by various media outlets, indicate significant discontent regarding Baerbock's nomination. Many ambassadors reportedly favored Schmid over Baerbock, viewing the latter's appointment as disrespectful. Some messages highlighted concerns that Baerbock's selection reinforces perceptions that powerful nations manipulate key UN positions for their own agendas.

Furthermore, Christoph Heusgen, a former head of the Munich Security Conference and long-time UN ambassador, has publicly denounced the nomination, stating that the UN should not be treated as a personal resource. He pointed out that Schmid had already been officially nominated and had established connections with over a hundred delegations, making her a respected figure within the international community. Heusgen recounted a colleague's reaction to the sudden shift in nomination, suggesting that such practices are typically expected only in authoritarian regimes.

The public response to Baerbock's nomination has also been largely negative, according to a recent survey conducted by YouGov. The findings revealed that 57% of participants viewed the nomination unfavorably. Of those surveyed, 42% expressed outright disapproval, with an additional 15% leaning toward a negative assessment. In contrast, only a small fraction deemed the nomination as positive.

In defense of her nomination, Baerbock emphasized the importance of the upcoming General Assembly session, particularly in light of the search for a successor to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. She refuted claims that her candidacy undermined Schmid's previous work and insisted that Schmid would continue to play a significant role within the UN framework.

Baerbock articulated that the nomination process was a collaborative effort and that the themes for discussion at the General Assembly had been jointly prepared. She reassured that Schmid would still be active in a leading capacity.

It is important to note that the presidency of the UN General Assembly for the 2025/26 session is designated to the Western European and Others Group, of which Germany has secured a right to appoint the candidate. The election for the presidency is scheduled for early June, with the term commencing in September and lasting for one year.
