Meta has once again sparked interest with reports suggesting that an iPad version of Instagram is finally in the works. This follows a history of previous announcements that have yet to materialize, leaving many users hoping for a tailored experience on Apple's popular tablet.

For years, Instagram has been available primarily on smartphones, with many users expressing their frustration over the lack of a dedicated iPad application. Meta's management has repeatedly cited reasons for this absence, claiming that the user base for such an app is too limited, despite the iPad being the best-selling tablet on the market. Other explanations include alleged staffing shortages within the company to support such development. According to sources from The Information, ongoing discussions surrounding a potential ban on TikTok in the United States could be influencing Meta's decision to expand Instagram's reach. The firm is reportedly focusing on attracting TikTok users, aiming to convert them to Instagram, which would include the development of a version compatible with iPad. An insider has indicated that this project is already in progress, although there has been no official comment from Meta regarding a timeline for its release.

Currently, iPad users can access Instagram only through the iPhone app, which is not optimized for the larger screen. While the app can be used with the Stage Manager feature, it does not provide an ideal experience. Some users have resorted to accessing Instagram via web browsers, which limits the functionality available compared to the app.

In 2022, Instagram's leadership suggested that the iPad did not attract a sufficiently large audience to make an app a priority.
