Injured Ukrainian Soldiers Receiving Medical Treatment in Brandenburg

Tue 1st Apr, 2025

As part of an international initiative to support injured military personnel, Germany has welcomed wounded Ukrainian soldiers for medical care. Notably, some of these soldiers are being treated in hospitals across Brandenburg.

According to the Health Ministry in Potsdam, from May 25, 2022, to mid-January of this year, a total of 23 patients were treated in Brandenburg facilities, primarily in hospitals located in Potsdam, Brandenburg/Havel, and Cottbus. This information was disclosed in response to an inquiry by the AfD party in the state parliament.

Since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine in March 2022, Germany has utilized an international medical evacuation program, known as Med-Evac, to transport and care for patients, including severely injured and critically ill individuals from Ukraine. These patients are not exclusively military personnel, and the ministry refrained from providing detailed information, citing patient confidentiality and legal obligations.

The Med-Evac system was initially developed during the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, establishing a nationwide mechanism for patient transfers across Germany to prevent the overloading of intensive care units. The Kleeblatt mechanism divides the country into regions to distribute patients effectively. After the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, this system was integrated with international medical evacuation protocols.

In addition to receiving medical care, it is already known that Ukrainian soldiers are also being trained in Brandenburg for combat purposes, contributing to the approximately 20,000 Ukrainian troops who have undergone training in Germany as part of an EU mission.
