The Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano, located on the Indonesian island of Flores, has erupted once again, sending a towering ash column five kilometers into the atmosphere. This latest eruption occurred in the afternoon local time, marking a significant increase in volcanic activity for this 1,600-meter-high volcano, which has been active since late 2023.
Authorities have responded by elevating the alert level to Level IV, the highest on Indonesia's four-tier scale. Residents and visitors have been instructed to maintain a safe distance from the volcano, with a minimum exclusion zone of six kilometers set around the crater. In some areas to the west, north, and northeast of the volcano, the exclusion zone has been extended to seven kilometers due to safety concerns.
Officials have urged the local population to remain calm and adhere to safety protocols. Residents are advised to cover their mouths and noses with masks to protect against the harmful effects of volcanic ash, which poses serious health risks. Additionally, there are warnings about potential mudslides, especially if heavy rainfall occurs following the ashfall.
It remains uncertain whether this eruption will disrupt air travel in the region, particularly to Bali, a popular tourist destination situated approximately 500 kilometers away. Previous eruptions of the Lewotobi Laki-Laki have caused flight cancellations, affecting travel plans for many.
In late 2023, the volcano had ejected molten rocks and ash, leading to tragic fatalities as people were trapped under the debris of their burning homes. Thousands were displaced and accommodated in evacuation centers as volcanic activity intensified.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for its geological volatility. The island of Flores, located east of Bali, attracts tourists with its stunning landscapes and diving spots, despite the inherent risks posed by its active volcanoes.
