Increase in International Students Enrolling at German Universities

Tue 11th Mar, 2025

Recent statistical data reveals a notable rise in the number of international students commencing their studies at higher education institutions in Germany. In the academic year 2024, approximately 491,400 individuals began their first semester, marking a 2% increase compared to the previous year, according to the Federal Statistical Office.

This growth is primarily attributed to an influx of students from abroad, as the proportion of international first-year students rose by around 10% from the previous year. In contrast, the number of domestic students has decreased by roughly 1%. Currently, international students constitute nearly 30% of all first-time enrollees, a significant increase from 22% a decade ago.

The increase in first-year students varies significantly across different fields of study. Notably, there has been a substantial rise in the engineering disciplines, with an increase of 3.6%, as well as in human medicine and health sciences, which saw a growth of 3%. Conversely, the fields of law, business, and social sciences experienced a modest growth of 0.6%, while the humanities showed a minimal increase of 0.4%. Interestingly, the arts and humanities sector faced a decline of 1.2% in new enrollments.

Despite the rise in first-year students, the overall number of students enrolled in German universities remains stable. For the winter semester of 2024/2025, the total number of students is around 2.8 million, reflecting a slight decline of 1% in domestic students, while the number of international students has surged by 5%, reaching approximately 492,600.

This trend underscores Germany's growing appeal as a destination for international education, highlighting its commitment to attracting a diverse student body and fostering a global academic environment.
