A dramatic incident unfolded in Görlitz, Saxony, when car thieves, driving a stolen Audi A4, lost control during a police chase, leading to a serious accident. The incident occurred around 7:30 AM on the A4, near the Königshainer Berge tunnel, as reported by local authorities.

The driver, a 43-year-old Polish national, had stolen the white Audi A4 earlier in Thüringen. Following the theft, he attempted to evade police at high speeds. During the pursuit, he veered off the road, launching the vehicle over a concrete barrier before crashing into a power distribution building.

Emergency services, including firefighters and paramedics, were quickly dispatched to the scene. Both the driver and his passenger sustained severe injuries and were transported to the hospital. The driver was airlifted while the passenger was also taken for medical treatment. Their current condition has not been disclosed.

Authorities confirmed that both men were under the influence of drugs during the incident, specifically amphetamines, with the passenger also testing positive for cocaine. Investigations are underway by the criminal police regarding the theft and subsequent crash.

The wrecked Audi has been secured for forensic examination, with damages estimated at around 55,000 euros. As a result of the collision, the highway tunnel was closed for approximately two hours, causing significant traffic disruptions.

This incident highlights ongoing issues with vehicle theft and reckless driving, raising concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of law enforcement in preventing such crimes.
