Ten Years After the OECD's Warning: Bias Against Boys in Schools Still Ignored

As the new school year approaches in Hessen, stricter regulations regarding the use of mobile devices, particularly smartphones, will come into effect. To guide parents through these changes, two online information sessions focusing on media education have been organized.
The initiatives are being coordinated by the Youth and Media Counseling Center, as announced by the Ministry of Education in anticipation of the new school year, which begins on August 18. These sessions will provide parents with crucial insights on the updated smartphone policies in schools and emphasize the importance of media education within families.
This school year marks the first implementation of a comprehensive ban on mobile phones across all educational institutions in Hessen. The use of personal smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches will be strictly prohibited, especially in elementary schools, while secondary schools will have some allowances.
The Ministry of Education highlighted that while devices like smartphones and social media platforms are integral to young people's lives, they also pose potential risks. The lack of media literacy can lead to mental health issues, social isolation, misinformation, and reduced civic engagement.
The upcoming online sessions will address various media-related challenges, including online challenges, cyber grooming, and cyberbullying. These 60 to 90-minute events will include practical advice, brief expert presentations, and a Q&A segment, covering topics such as screen time management and media addiction. The sessions are scheduled for August 26 for elementary and special education schools, and August 27 for secondary and vocational schools, both running from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
With the introduction of the smartphone ban, the ministry has reiterated the importance of adhering to educational regulations, ensuring that students can engage in a safe and focused learning environment.
