Hellabrunn: Geozoo of Biodiversity
Founded in 1911, Hellabrunn Zoo is one of the most renowned scientifically-led zoos in Europe. The zoo is home to more than 500 animal species that live in a unique natural paradise in the beautiful Isar Meadows conservation area.
First geo-zoo in the world
The first geo-zoo in the world is at Hellabrunn Zoo, which introduced the ground-breaking idea of grouping the animals at the zoo geographically by continent in 1928. The exciting animal worlds of the polar regions, Africa, Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Australia are all accessible on a walk through Hellabrunn. The animals at Hellabrunn frequently coexist in large enclosures with other animals, just as they would in their natural habitat.
The zoo hopes to revive this tradition by reinstating its geo-zoo concept as the center of attention after easing the policy over the past few decades. According to the target and development plan created in 2012, the highlights are to be evenly distributed across the 40 hectare grounds and the animal enclosures are to be well-equipped for the animals. It also provides a description of the current situation as well as clear guidelines for the future.
Giraffes, meerkats, and porcupines have been residing in the new Africa zone at the Isar entrance of the zoo since the opening of the 10,000 m2 African giraffe savannah in 2013 - the first significant step towards becoming a geo-zoo of the future. The Hellabrunn Master Plan's next major accomplishment came with the completion of the Mühlendorf village and Zoo School in 2019. Visitors can interact with heritage and endangered domestic animal breeds while also learning about how animals changed from being wild species to domestic species with the aid of fun, interactive stations.
Around the world with all your senses
Modern zoos are vital for species conservation, research, and education in addition to being well-liked recreational destinations. A zoo is where a lot of kids first get to experience the fascinating animal kingdom. Young and old visitors are inspired to protect the incredible animal world after experiencing these animals with all five senses, whether it be the roar of the lions, the silvery gibbons' climbing prowess, or the potent smell of our elephants.
