Heat Protection Plan for Athletes Launched

Wed 4th Jun, 2025

In response to rising temperatures and their impact on health, a new initiative aimed at safeguarding athletes during heatwaves has been announced by the Ministry in Berlin. The 'Model Heat Protection Plan for Organized Sport' is designed to mitigate health risks associated with extreme weather conditions, as highlighted by the World Health Organization (WHO), which states that individuals engaged in sports face heightened health risks due to climate change.

The plan outlines several recommendations for sports clubs and associations, emphasizing the importance of proper preparation and frequent breaks during training sessions. Key measures include ensuring the availability of cool drinking water at sports venues and the establishment of shaded areas for athletes to cool down.

While the guidelines are intended to facilitate sports activities in hot weather, the plan also advises caution. It suggests that competitions should have predetermined criteria for cancellation based on temperature conditions. Additionally, athletes are encouraged to avoid beverages containing alcohol and caffeine, as well as to refrain from using open flames, such as those used for grilling.

The ministry clarified that these recommendations are not enforceable mandates but rather guidance to help individuals avoid health complications due to extreme heat. It is the responsibility of local governments and communities to create specific heat action plans tailored to their needs.

As global temperatures continue to rise, the frequency of extreme heat days has significantly increased. Estimates from the Robert Koch Institute indicate that approximately 3,000 heat-related deaths occurred in Germany in both 2023 and 2024, with 2022 recording even higher figures. Meteorologists predict a high likelihood of another hot summer this year.

To address potential health impacts, former Health Minister Karl Lauterbach previously introduced a national heat protection strategy for public health in June 2023. This initiative has been further developed in collaboration with the German Olympic Sports Confederation into a comprehensive plan for recreational sports. Concurrently, heat protection strategies have also been released for pharmacies and outpatient psychotherapy practices.
