Strange Incident in Hannover: Hearse Loses Coffin on the Road

Wed 12th Mar, 2025

A peculiar event occurred at an intersection in Hemmingen, a district near Hannover, when a coffin unexpectedly fell from a hearse. The incident took place while the vehicle was stopped at a traffic light, leaving the coffin precariously positioned in the middle of the road. Quick to react, three men exited the vehicle to retrieve the fallen item, which fortunately did not contain a body.

According to the funeral director, the incident was a result of a recent accident. The coffin in question was a dummy used for impromptu transfers and had just been collected from the supplier a mere ten minutes prior to the incident. While making a turn from the B3 highway, the hearse was struck on the side by another vehicle, causing the bolts on the lift that secured the coffin to disengage.

As the parties involved in the accident attempted to clear the intersection quickly, the coffin and its lift fell onto the road. Witnesses described the scene as unsettling, with the vehicle's occupants hurriedly carrying the coffin back to the hearse to avoid further embarrassment.

The funeral director, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed his shock and discomfort over the situation, acknowledging that such incidents inevitably attract attention and dismay from onlookers. Thankfully, passing motorists assisted in helping to restore the coffin to its rightful place in the hearse.

This unusual occurrence, while distressing for those involved, highlights the unpredictable nature of road incidents and the importance of securing loads properly, especially in sensitive situations involving funerary services.
