Health Politicians Secure Seats in Bundestag

Several health policymakers have successfully retained their positions in the Bundestag following the recent elections. Karl Lauterbach, the current Federal Minister of Health, achieved victory in his constituency of Leverkusen/Köln IV for the sixth consecutive time, establishing a strong lead over his CDU opponent, Siegmar Heß, shortly after the initial projections were released.

As Lauterbach did not appear on the NRW state list of the SPD, he relied solely on securing a direct mandate to return to the Bundestag. Meanwhile, Matthias Mieves, a digital expert from the SPD, also defended his direct mandate in Kaiserslautern, narrowly surpassing the AfD candidate. Mieves expressed his gratitude on LinkedIn, stating that it is a significant honor to represent his hometown in the German Parliament. Notably, he is committed to advancing health digitization.

On the state lists, Sabine Dittmar, who previously served as the Secretary of State at the Federal Ministry of Health, along with current Federal Patient Commissioner Stefan Schwartze, will also be returning to the Bundestag. Schwartze narrowly lost his direct mandate in the Herford - Minden-Lübbecke II constituency to the CDU candidate Joachim Ebmeyer.

In the wake of the elections, Jens Spahn, the deputy leader of the Union parliamentary group, called for prompt coalition negotiations. He suggested that discussions with the SPD could commence within the week, emphasizing the importance of forming a government before Easter.

Paula Piechotta from the Green Party will be re-entering the Bundestag through the Saxony state list, while Sören Pellmann from the Left Party secured the direct mandate in Leipzig II. Janosch Dahmen will join the Parliament via the NRW state list, while Kirsten Kappert-Gonther will do so through the Bremen list.

Tino Sorge, who previously served as the health policy spokesperson for the Union parliamentary group, missed out on the direct mandate in his Magdeburg constituency but will enter via the Saxony-Anhalt state list. Stephan Pilsinger secured a direct mandate in the Munich-West/Mitte constituency.

Additionally, Georg Kippels and Jens Spahn both achieved direct mandates. Kippels won decisively in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis constituency, while Spahn emerged victorious in Steinfurt I - Borken I.

In a noteworthy development, virologist Hendrik Streeck from Bonn has made his debut in the Bundestag, winning the direct mandate for the CDU in Bonn.
