The upcoming renovation of the Hamburg-Berlin railway line will lead to significant disruptions, impacting both long-distance and regional travel. In light of this, Brandenburg's Minister of Transport has voiced concerns regarding the adequacy of the planned replacement services.
Starting in August, the critical high-speed rail route between Hamburg and Berlin will undergo extensive renovations, necessitating a complete closure for nine months. This closure is expected to affect not only long-distance trains but also the regional transport network. The railway authorities have proposed a comprehensive substitute service featuring over 170 buses, but the effectiveness of this plan is under scrutiny.
The Minister of Transport for Brandenburg has criticized the initial service plan, suggesting that it falls short of what is required. He highlighted that the anticipated travel times for the replacement buses are excessively long, which will impose significant hardships on commuters. The minister has emphasized that the railway company must refine its approach to minimize the impact on daily travelers.
Furthermore, the minister pointed out that the duration of the construction work is longer than ideal. He proposed that an expedited timeline of eight months should be the maximum allowable period for the renovations to prevent undue delays in service restoration. Although he acknowledged the necessity of the complete closure for construction, he urged the railway company to reassess their entire plan to enhance its efficiency and effectiveness.
Currently, the estimated travel time from Wittenberge in northwest Brandenburg to Berlin's main station is expected to increase from one and a half hours via the RE8 service to three and a half hours, which raises significant concerns for daily commuters. Additionally, long-distance trains will face rerouting, resulting in travel times between Hamburg and Berlin extending by approximately 45 minutes.
The upcoming renovation poses challenges for many individuals who rely on this crucial transportation link for their daily journeys. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the railway authorities will address these concerns and whether improvements to the replacement services can be effectively implemented.
