Wed 26th Feb, 2025

Bielefeld, Germany - A significant police operation is currently underway outside the Regional Court in Bielefeld following an outbreak of gunfire that resulted in several injuries. Eyewitnesses have reported seeing multiple individuals on the ground, with at least one person undergoing resuscitation efforts.

Emergency services, including police and paramedics, have been deployed to the scene as the situation unfolds. Earlier in the day, a trial began concerning the murder of professional boxer Besar Nimani, who was shot dead in Bielefeld.

The trial involves the alleged shooter, Hüseyin Akkurt, who was apprehended in Brussels last July. A second suspect remains at large. The court proceedings commenced at 9 a.m. local time, and the incident occurred shortly after the trial concluded.

As the courtroom proceedings wrapped up around 1:30 p.m., shots rang out approximately 150 meters from the courthouse entrance. Witnesses reported that court officers shouted warnings about the gunfire, prompting people to flee to safety.

Authorities are still assessing the situation to determine if the perpetrators have been captured. Reports suggest that one suspect may have barricaded themselves in a nearby building, while another individual has been detained. A police helicopter is currently circling the area as part of the ongoing operation.

Among the injured are at least two relatives of the defendant, one of whom sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, while another is reportedly in critical condition with a wound to the chest.

The case against Hüseyin Akkurt alleges that he, along with an accomplice, ambushed Nimani on March 9 of the previous year. The boxer was shot multiple times in a public area after parking his vehicle in a no-parking zone. The motive for the attack may be linked to underworld activities.
