Green Party's Ten-Point Migration Plan: Robert Habeck's Approach to Balancing Safety and Humanity

Tue 4th Feb, 2025

In response to the recent proposals from the Union's chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz regarding migration policy, Robert Habeck, the Green Party's candidate for chancellor, has unveiled a comprehensive ten-point plan aimed at enhancing security while maintaining a humane approach.

Habeck asserts that a broad-based security initiative is essential in Germany, especially given the tragic violent incidents that have occurred in various cities. He emphasizes the importance of ensuring safety for all individuals, regardless of their migration background.

However, Habeck is committed to implementing policies that do not foster resentment and protect fundamental rights. He firmly believes that no group should be unfairly targeted or stigmatized and insists that discussions surrounding security must take place among democratically inclined individuals, explicitly excluding any collaboration with far-right extremists.

Among the key aspects of his plan is a call for a vigorous enforcement of outstanding arrest warrants. Habeck highlights the alarming statistic that over 170,000 arrest warrants remain unexecuted in Germany, including more than 14,000 related to violent crimes. He advocates for enhanced powers for federal law enforcement agencies to facilitate automated data analysis and biometric facial recognition, measures that had previously received government approval but were halted by the Bundesrat.

Additionally, he emphasizes the necessity for mental health evaluations during the initial medical examinations of asylum seekers, as well as the imperative for federal and state security agencies to share vital information with one another. Habeck insists that the European Union's agreed-upon Common European Asylum System must be integrated into national law in Germany.

Habeck further argues for the consistent deportation of non-German individuals who pose a threat or are serious criminals, which would likely include individuals from countries such as Afghanistan and Syria. He acknowledges the existing challenges, such as the lack of cooperation from countries of origin, and stresses the need to overcome these obstacles. He advocates for the lawful detention of these individuals within the constitutional framework.

As a final measure, Habeck suggests that if other EU nations fail to adhere to the Dublin regulations regarding the return of individuals to their responsible countries, Germany should consider pursuing legal action against these countries.

Within the leadership of the Green Party, there are concerns that the migration issue may overshadow other important topics during the upcoming federal election campaign. The party's explicit goal is to counteract this trend while maintaining a commitment to a compassionate refugee policy.
