Green Party Files Motion Against Berlin's Education Senator Over False Statements

Wed 25th Jun, 2025

The ongoing controversy surrounding the case of teacher Oziel Inácio-Stech has escalated within Berlin's political landscape. The Green Party's faction in the Berlin House of Representatives has announced plans to submit a motion of disapproval against Education Senator Katharina Günther-Wünsch from the CDU, accusing her of making repeated false statements regarding the handling of discrimination and bullying incidents involving Inácio-Stech.

Inácio-Stech, a member of the LGBTQ+ community, claims to have faced prolonged harassment, insults, and bullying from students, particularly those from Muslim backgrounds, as well as unfounded allegations from a colleague. His legal representative had sent a detailed complaint letter to Senator Günther-Wünsch in December 2024, which she initially stated she had not read until May of the following year.

However, following a review of the records on June 20, 2025, Günther-Wünsch issued a personal statement correcting her earlier claims, acknowledging that the letter had been in her possession since December 4, 2024. She explained that the error stemmed from the letter not being recorded in the electronic postal log, expressing regret for her inability to recall its presence.

The Green Party leaders, Bettina Jarasch and Louis Krüger, have emphasized the significance of these inaccuracies in the context of the parliamentary evaluation of the reported discriminatory and bullying incidents. They assert that Günther-Wünsch's misstatements undermined her personal accountability for the situation, leading to a demand for her apology to the Parliament.

Jarasch and Krüger highlighted the constitutional obligation of Senate members to provide accurate and comprehensive information to the Parliament, stressing that disseminating false or misleading information violates this duty. The Green Party's motion aims to hold the Education Senator accountable for her actions and restore trust in the governance of educational matters.

The case of Oziel Inácio-Stech has drawn significant attention, illustrating the challenges faced by educators in navigating issues of discrimination and institutional response. As the political discourse unfolds, the implications of this situation extend beyond individual grievances, touching on broader themes of accountability, transparency, and the protection of vulnerable community members within educational settings.
