Government Urged to Ensure Stability of E-Prescription System

Thu 3rd Jul, 2025

The E-prescription system has become an integral part of pharmacy operations for over a year and a half. Initially, the system faced numerous disruptions, but while stability has improved, reports of outages continue to surface. The Lower Saxony Pharmacists' Association is now calling on governmental authorities to take action.

Berend Groeneveld, the chair of the association, expressed frustration over the persistent issues with the E-prescription system. He highlighted that pharmacists are often left to inform patients that they cannot provide the necessary medications due to outages in the nationwide E-prescription server. This situation not only causes delays and stress for pharmacists but significantly impacts patients who rely on timely access to their medications.

All pharmacies in Germany, including those in Lower Saxony, are connected to the Telematics Infrastructure, which facilitates the E-prescription process. Since January 2024, the E-prescription has been mandatory, placing the onus on the government to ensure the system operates smoothly and that the pharmaceutical supply chain remains uninterrupted.

Groeneveld emphasized the responsibility of political leaders to address these ongoing challenges, stating that the effectiveness of the E-prescription system is crucial for ensuring citizens have access to necessary medications. He urged for immediate steps to be taken to resolve the technical issues affecting the E-prescription process.

The E-prescription aims to modernize the way prescriptions are issued and processed, moving away from traditional paper prescriptions to a digital format that can streamline healthcare services. However, the current technical difficulties present significant barriers to achieving this goal. The association's call for action highlights the need for a stable digital infrastructure that can support pharmacists in their essential role within the healthcare system.

As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, ensuring the reliability of digital systems like the E-prescription is paramount. Stakeholders across the pharmacy sector are looking for reassurance that the government will prioritize addressing these challenges to enhance the overall efficiency of medication dispensing and patient care.
