Temperature Divide in Germany Widens as West Sees Mild Weather, East Faces Deep Freeze

Sat 31st Jan, 2026

Germany is currently experiencing an increasing disparity in temperatures between its western and eastern regions, according to recent reports from the German Weather Service (DWD). While western areas, particularly along the Rhine, are expected to enjoy temperatures reaching up to 10 degrees Celsius, the northeast is bracing for persistent sub-zero conditions, with daytime highs only between minus 8 and minus 5 degrees Celsius.

The contrasting weather patterns are most apparent over the weekend and into early next week. Residents in western Germany can expect largely frost-free nights, while the northeastern states, including regions such as Vorpommern, will face overnight lows that could drop to -10 degrees Celsius, and even as low as -14 degrees in the coming days. Along the coasts, the cold will feel even more intense due to strong east to southeast winds, which may reach stormy levels at times, further amplifying the chill factor.

Despite these challenging conditions, widespread black ice is not anticipated across most of the country. The DWD emphasizes that while rainfall is minimal, there remains a localized risk of freezing rain, particularly during nighttime hours in the northwest and central regions. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, especially in areas prone to sudden temperature drops, as isolated patches of black ice may develop unexpectedly and pose significant hazards on the roads.

The persistent cold in eastern Germany is also starting to impact infrastructure. Notably, parts of the Mittelland Canal and the Elbe-Havel Canal near Magdeburg have been closed to shipping due to the formation of thick ice sheets. In some locations, ice has reached up to 12 centimeters in thickness, and narrow passages have seen ice piling up to half a meter high, making navigation impossible for vessels until conditions improve.

The ongoing temperature disparity is expected to shape weather patterns well into the beginning of the week. Monday will bring a slight overall temperature drop, with daytime values ranging from minus 9 degrees in the northeast to plus 8 degrees along the Rhine corridor. Sunshine will be sporadic, with the greatest likelihood of clear skies occurring in Vorpommern and the Alps. However, for most regions, overcast conditions and intermittent cold will dominate.

In response to the challenging winter conditions, local municipalities have intensified their efforts to keep roads and public spaces safe. The German Association of Cities and Municipalities has commended local authorities for their winter service operations, acknowledging that although it is not always possible to clear all streets immediately, significant efforts are being made to maintain traffic safety and accessibility for residents.

As the temperature gap between Germany's east and west widens, residents are encouraged to monitor local weather reports closely and remain vigilant, particularly when traveling by car or using public transport affected by ongoing labor strikes. The situation highlights the need for regional adaptation to diverse winter weather challenges across the country.
