Rising Support in Germany for Retaliatory Tariffs on U.S. Goods

Thu 27th Mar, 2025

A significant portion of the German population is advocating for a robust response from the European Union regarding the recently announced tariffs by the United States. According to a YouGov survey, 68% of respondents support the imposition of tariffs on American products imported into the EU. Only 17% expressed opposition to such measures.

The survey, which gathered responses from over 2,000 eligible voters between March 21 and March 24, indicates a strong consensus across various political affiliations. Individuals from major political parties, including SPD, CDU/CSU, Greens, FDP, and Die Linke, largely favor the implementation of retaliatory tariffs. This widespread agreement reflects a collective stance among the electorate concerning international trade relations.

However, individuals identifying with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the BSW showed comparatively lower support, although a majority in both groups still favored counter-tariffs. Specifically, 50% of AfD supporters and 59% of BSW supporters backed the notion of imposing tariffs on U.S. goods.

The growing sentiment for a strong EU response highlights the escalating tensions in international trade, particularly between Europe and the United States. As the EU contemplates its strategy, the public's opinion may play a crucial role in shaping future decisions regarding trade policies and diplomatic relations.
