Federal Police Reports Decline in Irregular Migration

Tue 4th Feb, 2025
The German Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, announced a significant decrease in irregular immigration in the country, citing the latest statistics from the Federal Police. According to Faeser, there were 127,549 unauthorized entries into Germany in 2023, while the figure for the previous year dropped to 83,572, marking a notable reduction. In her statement in Berlin, Faeser highlighted that nearly 47,500 individuals were turned away at the country's land, air, and sea borders or during attempts to cross illegally last year. For the month of January 2025, she reported 5,147 unauthorized entries, indicating a 37% decline in asylum applications compared to January 2024. At the beginning of the previous year, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees received approximately 26,000 applications, demonstrating the effectiveness of the government's measures such as border controls and deportations. Faeser emphasized the importance of these efforts and urged the Bundestag to pass proposed legislation aimed at implementing the Common European Asylum System. The decrease in illegal entries reflects the ongoing efforts by the German government to manage migration effectively while ensuring security at the borders. The statistics released by Faeser are part of a broader strategy to address irregular migration, which has been a significant issue in European politics over recent years. The government's initiatives, including enhanced border surveillance and cooperation with neighboring countries to manage migration flows, appear to be yielding positive results. As the EU continues to grapple with migration challenges, Germany's approach may serve as a model for other member states seeking to balance humanitarian responsibilities with national security concerns. As discussions continue in the Bundestag regarding the proposed asylum reforms, the focus remains on creating a sustainable and humane migration framework that aligns with EU standards. The government's commitment to addressing irregular migration through legislative measures and operational strategies is expected to shape future policies and responses to migration in Germany and beyond.
