Migration Trends: Decrease in Unauthorized Entries and Asylum Applications

Tue 4th Feb, 2025

The Federal Ministry of the Interior has reported a significant decline in the number of asylum applications in Germany. As per the latest data released, 12,350 individuals expressed their intention to seek asylum upon entering the country in January, marking a 37% decrease compared to the same month last year when there were 19,611 applications. This figure is also less than half of the 25,380 applications recorded in January two years ago.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser attributed this downward trend to strict border controls and new legislation aimed at expediting the deportation process. She emphasized the government's proactive measures, stating that while others may engage in mere rhetoric, her administration has taken concrete steps to address the situation.

In Germany, an asylum application is counted when migrants request protection upon entering the country, which does not necessarily equate to the total number of asylum requests, as applications can also be filed later or individuals may choose to migrate to another country.

According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, the number of initial asylum applications in December was relatively stable at 12,178. However, the overall number of asylum applications last year experienced a notable decline of approximately 30% compared to the previous year. Statistics for January's asylum applications have yet to be made available.

In terms of unauthorized entries, the ministry reported that there were 127,549 instances in 2023, a decrease from 83,572 the previous year. In January alone, there were 5,147 unauthorized entries recorded, with nearly 47,487 individuals being turned away at land, air, and sea borders or during illegal crossings in the past year.

The ongoing discourse surrounding migration continues to spark debates across political lines, particularly regarding the implementation of stricter asylum policies. Experts and officials are analyzing the impacts of the government's recent measures and their effectiveness in managing migration flows into Germany.
