Germany Positioned to Generate 250,000 Jobs in Alternative Meat and Dairy Sector

Mon 10th Feb, 2025
A recent study indicates significant potential for job creation within Germany's alternative meat and dairy industry, projecting up to 250,000 new positions over the next two decades. Conducted by the consultancy firm Systemiq for the Good Food Institute (GFI), the report highlights Germany's robust capabilities to emerge as a key player in the sector. The study estimates that the industry could contribute as much as EUR65 billion to the German economy by 2045. The domestic market alone is expected to account for approximately EUR23 billion, complemented by exports that could generate an additional EUR35 billion through the sale of production equipment like extruders and fermenters. As a leading manufacturer of machinery in this field, Germany is considered to be in an exceptional position to support the growth of alternative protein sources. Switching to vegetarian substitutes is also projected to have positive environmental impacts. The GFI estimates that greenhouse gas emissions could decrease by up to 4.8 million tons, and the land required for food production could be reduced by approximately 1.2 million hectares. Additionally, the water usage associated with alternative meat and dairy products is significantly lower than that of traditional livestock farming. In 2023, the alternative protein sector in Germany achieved record revenues of EUR2.2 billion, reinforcing the country's standing as the largest market for plant-based substitutes in Europe. To fully harness the potential of this burgeoning industry, the GFI emphasizes the need for increased political will and financial support. The organization advocates for a substantial increase in public research funding from the current EUR13 million per year to EUR140 million. Furthermore, it suggests that institutional food services, such as those in schools, hospitals, and childcare facilities, should prioritize plant-based alternatives in their offerings. The GFI operates as a nonprofit think tank funded by donations, focusing on promoting the adoption of plant-based products. The findings of this study underscore a transformative opportunity for Germany, promising not only economic growth but also advancements in sustainability through meat and dairy alternatives.
