Electric Vehicles Dominate July Car Registrations in Germany

Tue 5th Aug, 2025

The trend towards electric vehicles (EVs) continues to gain momentum in Germany, with over 18% of all new car registrations in July being electric. This surge, as reported by the Federal Motor Transport Authority, reflects a significant increase in consumer interest and market availability.

In July alone, more than 48,600 new electric vehicles were registered, marking a remarkable 58% rise compared to the same month last year. This translates to approximately 18.4% of all new cars being battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

The ongoing demand for electric vehicles has been consistent throughout the year, rebounding sharply after a notable decline last year. Between January and July 2025, over 297,000 BEVs were newly registered, representing a 38.4% increase year-on-year.

Industry experts attribute this growth primarily to an expanded range of vehicles in entry-level segments. Several manufacturers have launched new models that are not only technologically advanced but also more affordable for a wider range of consumers.

On the other hand, Tesla continues to face challenges in the German market. The company reported only around 1,100 new vehicle registrations in July, a staggering decrease of more than 55% from the previous year.

Overall, Germany saw approximately 264,802 new passenger cars registered in July, an increase of about 11% compared to the same month in the previous year. However, the Verband der Internationalen Kraftfahrzeughersteller (VDIK) indicated that a unique situation last year, due to new EU type approval regulations, led to a significant drop in registrations, with many being shifted to June. Consequently, when averaged over June and July, the car market actually reflected a 2.7% decline compared to the same period last year.
