Energy Prices in Germany Decrease by Five Percent Amid Weak Global Economy

Sun 25th May, 2025

Recent data from a comparison portal reveals that energy costs for consumers in Germany have dropped by approximately five percent since the beginning of the year. The average annual energy expenditure for a three-person household has decreased from EUR5,442 in January to EUR5,173 now, reflecting a reduction of EUR269.

The decline in energy prices is attributed to a sluggish global economy, as explained by energy expert Thorsten Storck from Verivox. Lower demand for energy resources has been influenced by falling crude oil prices, which have subsequently reduced costs for heating oil and fuel. Additionally, there has been a slight reduction in average prices for electricity and gas since the start of the year, aided by decreased demand for heating oil following the conclusion of the heating season.

Despite this recent decrease, energy prices remain significantly higher, by over 25 percent, compared to levels before the energy crisis in 2022. This enduring increase reflects ongoing challenges within the global energy market.

The analysis conducted by Verivox is based on a standard three-person household's energy consumption patterns, which includes an annual heating requirement of 20,000 kilowatt-hours, an electricity usage of 4,000 kilowatt-hours, and a yearly driving distance of 13,300 kilometers.
