Germany's Election Campaign Overlooks European Concerns

Fri 21st Feb, 2025

In the context of the upcoming German elections, the significance of European policy appears to be largely sidelined. A recent analysis by the Centrum für Europäische Politik (cep) emphasizes that as US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin engage in discussions regarding Europe's future, German political parties are not sufficiently addressing this critical issue in their election platforms.

The cep's findings highlight an urgent need for the next German government to prioritize European matters. Without robust European strategies, Germany risks becoming a passive observer on the international stage, particularly at a time when the European Union is grappling with what has been described as its most significant existential crisis in decades, directly impacting Germany's prosperity and security.

While references to Europe do exist within the election programs, only a handful of parties have proposed substantial strategies for the continent's future. The cep warns that without clear direction, Germany will struggle to influence European policy effectively.

One common theme among the parties, with the exception of the Left Party, is the reduction of bureaucratic processes. Several parties, including CDU/CSU, FDP, BSW, and AfD, are advocating for the elimination or suspension of certain EU legal reporting obligations. In contrast, the SPD and the Greens are focusing on legal consolidation and digitalization to help businesses comply with these requirements.

Another contentious issue is migration policy. Various parties are adopting differing stances, with some prioritizing a security-based approach while others seek a balance between restrictions and their European commitments. Disagreement also permeates discussions on climate policy. The cep cautions that without a greater sense of responsibility towards Europe, Germany risks diminishing its influence on the continent.

This election cycle presents a pivotal opportunity for Germany to reassess its role within the European framework. As the political landscape evolves, it is crucial for German parties to integrate European policy more comprehensively into their agendas, ensuring that the nation does not fall behind in shaping the future of Europe amidst external pressures.
