Possible Food Poisoning: German Tourist Dies in Sri Lanka

Fri 7th Feb, 2025

In a tragic incident during a holiday trip, a German woman has died in Sri Lanka, along with a British companion, raising concerns about potential food poisoning or exposure to toxic substances. Reports indicate that both women, along with another hostel guest, exhibited symptoms consistent with poisoning.

The victims were reportedly staying at the same hostel in Colombo, where local police are investigating allegations that harmful pesticides may have been sprayed in their accommodation. While the connection between the pesticide use and the deaths remains uncertain, authorities plan to conduct autopsies to determine the exact causes of death.

The 24-year-old British national was first admitted to a hospital displaying symptoms such as vomiting and altered consciousness, where she later passed away. The German tourist, aged between 26 and 27, succumbed shortly after being hospitalized. A third individual, who was sharing a room with the German woman, is also receiving treatment for similar symptoms.

Reports suggest that both women checked into the hostel at the end of January, shortly after pest control measures were reportedly implemented in one of the rooms, specifically targeting bed bugs. The local authorities have since ordered the closure of the hostel pending a thorough investigation into its health and safety standards.

The situation has drawn significant attention, and health officials are expected to scrutinize the establishment's compliance with sanitary regulations. As investigations continue, this incident underscores the importance of ensuring food safety and hygiene standards in hospitality services, particularly for international travelers.
