The galaxy, designated MoM z14, is believed to have formed approximately 280 million years after the Big Bang, establishing a new record in the field of astronomy.
This finding surpasses the previous record held by the galaxy JADES-GS-Z14-0, which was formed 290 million years post-Big Bang. To put this in perspective, the universe is currently estimated to be about 13.8 billion years old, while Earth itself is approximately 4.54 billion years old. The capabilities of the JWST have exceeded expectations, allowing scientists to observe such ancient cosmic structures just a few years after its launch.
To understand the implications of this discovery, it is important to consider the nature of light and its relationship with time in the vastness of space. Light travels at a finite speed of about 300,000 kilometers per second, and due to the expansion of the universe, observing distant galaxies means looking back in time. The designation of MoM z14 as around 13.5 billion years old means that to reach it, one would need to travel at the speed of light for 13.5 billion years.
The JWST's advanced infrared sensors have allowed astronomers to delve deeper into the cosmos than ever before, unveiling details about the universe's early stages. As galaxies move away from Earth, their light stretches, resulting in what is known as redshift. This phenomenon means that the farther away a galaxy is, the greater its redshift, allowing astronomers to determine its distance and age.
Interestingly, the JWST has revealed that MoM z14 is approximately 50 times smaller than the Milky Way and contains key elements such as nitrogen and carbon. This discovery is notable because it indicates that MoM z14 does not belong to the very first generation of galaxies, which would primarily consist of hydrogen and helium--elements that dominated the early universe. Heavier elements are formed later through nuclear fusion in stars, suggesting a more complex history for MoM z14 than previously thought.
The question now arises: will the JWST be able to identify the very first galaxies that formed after the Big Bang? While such discoveries may still be on the horizon, the scientific community remains optimistic and eager to continue exploring the depths of our universe.
