Fuel Prices Drop for the First Time in Seven Weeks: Where to Find the Best Deals

Thu 30th Jan, 2025

Motorists can finally breathe a sigh of relief as fuel prices have declined for the first time in seven weeks. This shift is particularly beneficial for diesel drivers, who have seen a notable decrease in prices.

Since December 10, fuel prices have been on a relentless rise, but recent trends indicate a reversal. Diesel prices have fallen by 2.1 cents, with current averages sitting at approximately EUR1.678 per liter. The reduction in crude oil prices has contributed significantly to this change, leading to lower costs at the pumps.

Similarly, petrol prices have also decreased, albeit by a smaller margin of 0.7 cents for Super E10. Average costs now stand at about EUR1.739 per liter. This widening price gap between diesel and petrol has increased to 6.1 cents per liter.

Despite these reductions, the current prices remain considerably higher than those seen prior to the recent surge. Compared to December 10, Super E10 has increased by 8.4 cents per liter, while diesel is up by 9.2 cents.

The primary factor behind this drop in prices is attributed to a decrease in the cost of crude oil. Brent crude, the key oil for European refineries, has fallen to around $76 per barrel, which is $2 less than last week. The euro's value has remained relatively stable.

For drivers looking to save money, timing and location are crucial when it comes to refueling. The optimal times to fill up are between 7 PM and 8 PM and between 9 PM and 10 PM. Conversely, prices tend to peak shortly after 7 AM, with petrol averaging 6.4 cents more expensive and diesel 7.3 cents pricier during this time.

Utilizing fuel price comparison apps can also assist in identifying the most economical stations. Live evaluations from various cities reveal that, as of 4 PM Wednesday, the cheapest prices for Super E10 were found in Potsdam, Stuttgart, and Wiesbaden, while cities like Dresden, Munich, and Saarbrücken had higher rates for petrol.
