Füchse Berlin is gearing up for a crucial phase in their season, with a focus on the European handball championship. Bob Hanning, the club's managing director, expressed confidence in the team's capability to secure the Champions League title, while adopting a more cautious stance regarding their chances for the German championship.
During a recent press conference, Hanning emphasized his belief that the team is well-positioned to achieve their long-standing goal of winning the Champions League. He stated, "I firmly believe we will be able to execute this crucial game plan." The upcoming quarter-final match will see the Füchse face off against Denmark's Aalborg Handbold, a challenge Hanning views optimistically, noting that the team has previously secured victories against top clubs in away matches.
The first leg of the quarter-final is set for April 24 in Berlin, followed by the return leg in Denmark six days later. However, before they can turn their attention to Europe, the Füchse must navigate two important Bundesliga matches. They will first compete against record champions THW Kiel on Wednesday and then face the third-placed team, Hannover, on Sunday.
Hanning acknowledged the team's diminished status as favorites for the Bundesliga title, particularly after a recent draw against Erlangen. Despite this setback, he remains hopeful about their prospects, stating that winning against Kiel will be a significant challenge but not impossible. "We have previously succeeded there, so it is within the realm of possibility," he remarked.
Should they manage to win against Hannover, Hanning believes the Füchse could still maintain strong chances in the title race. Star player Mathias Gidsel expressed confidence in his team's abilities, emphasizing that they still control their own fate.
Meanwhile, the Füchse are also focused on long-term planning. The club recently extended the contract of Italian right-winger Leo Prantner until 2029. Additionally, they have secured a new partnership with Berliner Energie und Wärme, a move that Hanning believes is essential for the club's financial sustainability. "The Füchse need sponsors, particularly from within the city, to thrive," he concluded.
