Fritzbox 7490 Receives FritzOS 7.60 Update After 12 Years

Thu 30th Jan, 2025

The Fritzbox 7490, a DSL router from AVM, has been updated to FritzOS version 7.60, marking the third firmware update for the nearly twelve-year-old device since 2023. Previous updates included FritzOS 7.56 and 7.59, which focused on bug fixes and minor enhancements.

This latest update aims to enhance the router's interoperability with various internet service providers, as well as improve stability for wireless connections. Users can expect a more reliable experience, although specific details regarding the changes have not been disclosed.

However, it is important to note that the Fritzbox 7490 will not be receiving some of the advanced features found in FritzOS 8. While the router now supports VPN tunnels via Wireguard, it lacks the ability to handle IPv6 traffic between VPN endpoints. Additionally, the new firmware does not include updated overview pages that feature graphical representations of connected clients and their bandwidth usage, nor does it add new smart home routines.

Despite these limitations, ongoing updates for older hardware like the Fritzbox 7490 are appreciated by its users. The firmware can be installed through the web interface or downloaded directly from AVM's server.
