Fraudulent Letters from Apobank Target Pharmacies

Fri 13th Jun, 2025

Fraudsters have once again begun sending counterfeit letters to clients, impersonating the Deutsche Apotheker- und Ärztebank (Apobank). In recent months, the bank has dealt with numerous incidents involving fake emails and letters that pressure pharmacies into revealing sensitive information. The latest wave of these fraudulent communications is being distributed via postal mail.

One such letter warns recipients that, despite repeated notifications and written communications, a mandatory verification of their digital banking access has not been completed. The letter threatens that without this verification, access to the Apobank app, online banking, and the apoTAN application will be completely disabled. It further claims that payment orders, including transfers, direct debits, and credits, would no longer be processed.

Pharmacies are urged to scan a data matrix code included in the letter, which allegedly directs them to a verification page. Here, they are instructed to enter their information, which the letter claims will be "automatically processed and verified." The letter concludes with a warning, encouraging recipients to complete the verification promptly to avoid disruptions in their digital access and payment transactions.

The letter is purportedly signed by "IT Organizer Wolfgang Brandt," although the signature appears to be obviously forged. Furthermore, while the QR code incorporates the bank's logo, the link it leads to does not direct to an official Apobank site.

Apobank is aware of this new fraudulent attempt and advises clients not to respond to such letters. Although more pharmacies have reported receiving these fake communications, many are doing so with the understanding that they are scams. To date, no incidents of financial loss have been reported to the bank.

In light of this situation, Apobank has reiterated its commitment to protecting its clients and has initiated discussions with pharmacy associations to raise awareness about these ongoing scams. They emphasize the importance of vigilance and suggest that customers verify any suspicious communications directly with the bank.

As the landscape of digital banking continues to evolve, so too does the complexity of security threats facing financial institutions and their clients. Pharmacies and individuals alike are encouraged to remain cautious and informed in order to safeguard their personal and financial information.
