Varel - Authorities in Varel have reported an incident involving a 28-year-old man from Duisburg, who was apprehended for allegedly pretending to be deaf and mute while soliciting donations outside a local supermarket.

On Thursday afternoon, around 5:20 PM, a vigilant observer noticed two individuals approaching shoppers with a deceptive narrative of being unable to hear or speak. They were seen carrying a clipboard that appeared to list amounts of money and signatures from unsuspecting donors.

Upon investigation, police officers were able to identify and detain the 28-year-old suspect. However, it was quickly established that he was neither deaf nor mute. Efforts to locate the second individual involved in the scheme were unsuccessful.

The local police have issued a warning regarding similar charitable scams, advising the public to remain cautious when approached by strangers requesting financial assistance. Such fraudsters often fabricate stories about their dire situations, claiming to be in need or suffering from disabilities to elicit sympathy and financial support. In some cases, they may even involve children to further provoke feelings of compassion.

Citizens are encouraged to approach such situations with skepticism. If there is any suspicion that the presented hardship is fabricated, individuals are advised to contact law enforcement by calling emergency services at 110.

This incident serves as a reminder for the community to stay alert and informed about potential scams that can exploit goodwill and generosity.
