Frankfurt to Construct State-of-the-Art Multi-Purpose Arena for EUR256 Million

Sat 1st Mar, 2025

Frankfurt, Germany - The city of Frankfurt is set to undergo a significant transformation with plans to build a modern multi-purpose arena, aimed at hosting concerts, ice hockey, and basketball games. This development comes in response to the growing concern that many major artists have been avoiding the city due to its outdated facilities.

Following extensive discussions between city officials and sports representatives, the city council has approved the construction of the arena, which will be located adjacent to the iconic Waldstadion, home to the Eintracht Frankfurt football club. The project is estimated to cost EUR256 million and will have a seating capacity of 15,200 spectators.

The design of the arena is inspired by a futuristic concept, resembling a green spaceship. Unlike other recent projects, such as the SAP Garden in Munich, which was financed by Red Bull, Frankfurt plans to undertake this project independently, with the goal of recouping costs through leasing and rental income.

The city's mayor expressed satisfaction with the council's decision, indicating that it marks a crucial step forward in addressing the city's long-standing need for a modern sports and entertainment venue. This new arena is expected to breathe new life into Frankfurt's sports scene.

Local sports teams, including the DEL team Löwen Frankfurt and the basketball club Skyliners, have welcomed the news. The managing director of Löwen Frankfurt emphasized that a contemporary venue is essential for the club's survival and for providing high-quality ice hockey to fans. The Skyliners, who have struggled to compete at higher levels without an adequate facility, expressed excitement about the potential for future participation in the Euroleague.

To mitigate potential traffic congestion during simultaneous events at the Waldstadion and the new arena, the city plans to enhance the surrounding transportation infrastructure. The land for the new arena is already owned by the city, which has held building rights for over two decades. While the mayor is eager to commence construction as soon as next year, the completion of the arena is anticipated no earlier than 2030.
