A devastating fire broke out at a prominent beach resort in the Dominican Republic, resulting in the death of one individual and the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests. The incident occurred at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel in Bayahibe, a sought-after destination on the southeastern coast known for attracting international tourists.
Authorities reported that the blaze erupted on Friday, rapidly spreading throughout the resort complex. Emergency services responded promptly to the scene, managing to bring the fire under control after extensive efforts. An initial investigation suggests that the fire's rapid progression was exacerbated by the thatched roofing of the resort buildings and prevailing wind conditions, which enabled the flames to engulf much of the structure within a short period.
The Emergency Operations Center stated that the majority of the hotel was significantly damaged, with large portions of the complex rendered unusable. Video footage from the site depicted thick plumes of smoke rising above the coastline, as multiple buildings with straw roofs were consumed by the fire.
According to official information, the casualty was identified as a 46-year-old Italian woman. Emergency medical teams transported three additional individuals to healthcare facilities, while six others received medical attention at the scene for minor injuries or smoke inhalation. The swift evacuation of approximately 1,690 guests was coordinated with the assistance of local authorities and resort staff, relocating them to nearby hotels and safe zones to ensure their wellbeing.
The resort, which had been operating at near capacity due to the high tourist season, faced logistical challenges in managing the large-scale evacuation. Emergency personnel established temporary shelters and provided support services for affected guests, including medical checks and assistance with retrieving personal belongings.
Officials have launched a full investigation into the cause of the fire. Preliminary findings indicate that the combination of flammable roofing materials and strong winds contributed to the intensity and speed of the blaze. Fire safety protocols and the resort's emergency response are also being reviewed as part of the ongoing inquiry.
There has been no immediate comment from the hotel's management regarding the extent of the damage or plans for reconstruction. Local authorities have assured visitors and residents that safety measures are being intensified across hospitality establishments in the region to prevent similar incidents.
Bayahibe, a renowned resort town on the Caribbean coast, is a major hub for tourism in the Dominican Republic, drawing visitors from across Europe, North America, and beyond. The recent fire has raised concerns among both local officials and the international travel community regarding fire safety standards in resorts featuring traditional construction methods.
Emergency response teams remain on site to monitor the aftermath and assist with recovery operations. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses and as the hotel franchise issues an official statement.
