The former director of a U.S. internet expansion initiative has expressed serious concerns regarding Starlink, the satellite internet service owned by Elon Musk. He claims that the service may mislead consumers by presenting itself as a viable replacement for faster fiber-optic connections, primarily benefiting Musk financially.
This warning was articulated in an email sent to former colleagues by Evan Fineman, whose tenure at the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program recently concluded. Fineman goes as far as to label the ongoing situation a potential fraud being perpetuated by Washington, suggesting that the government is favoring Starlink over more effective solutions.
In his communications, Fineman highlighted a recent decision by the U.S. Department of Commerce to amend regulations governing the BEAD program, which previously excluded providers like Starlink in favor of broadband fiber connections. This policy shift was described as a move to eliminate "unnecessary requirements" from prior administrations.
Fineman shared screenshots of his email on Bluesky, where he emphasized the need for the current administration to improve its understanding of the program and its implications. He urged his former colleagues to engage with lawmakers and advocate for the removal of obstructive regulatory elements while maintaining state flexibility to ensure optimal connectivity for local communities.
One of Fineman's key criticisms is that work on internet expansion projects in three states has already begun, yet government policies are hindering progress. He pointed out that other states have nearly completed their project plans and are awaiting approval for funding.
As the debate over the best methods for expanding internet access continues, the ex-director's remarks underline the complexities involved in balancing innovative technologies with the need for reliable, high-speed connections across the country.
